George Eglington

George Eglington (or Eglinton) was a 21 year old Able Seaman.

In Eglington’s case a connection with Orkney perhaps appears a little tenuous because of his English name; however, perhaps this was because the clerk spelled it that way. The Scottish version is Eglinton; the others have commonly-occurring 18th C Scottish or Orcadian names: Cray, Fea, Mackey, Miller, Murray, Stewart and Scott. Significantly however, according to the David’s musters, all -including Eglington- were born in Orkney and were recruited in Kirkwall Roads or in Stromness, indicating they were from Orkney and had been employed in one of Orkney’s maritime industries when recruited.
